A real Baskett case

During all the different posting of old servicemen’s pictures yesterday (Veteran’s Day), J.C. Poe posted a picture of an old Army man named Melvin Baskett, of Blairsville, IN.

Talk about your colorful characters.

Mel Baskett would usually show up at baseball games in St. Wendel and Posey County, IN, usually with a smile and more than a little mischief. My favorite story was when he showed up at a North Posey baseball game right after Bobby Knight had caused some controversy at Indiana and Kentucky was in need of a men’s basketball coach (I think it was after Rick Pitino left for the NBA). Anyway, Mel shows up at the Vikings’ game with a sign reading “Psycho Bob for UK coach.”

He was a dandy.
